ABOUT ORRA

ORRA, a community based organization engaged in the field of Environmental Conservation and Renewable Energy was established in the year 1998 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860,No.20516/66 of 1998-1999.It is located in BBSR, the state capital of Orissa. Orissa, one of the most backward states has a huge reserve of natural resources, rich cultural heritage and a very large coastal Sea belt. It has a wild variety of flora and fauna that includes Similipal, the mangrove forests of Bhitarkanika, Jagatsinghpur, and Balasore, the largest salt water lake, Chilika and many other sub-tropical dense forests in various parts of the state. As many as 62 types of tribal’s live in the state with a rich diversity of their culture, language and life style. Many of them live in the mining belt whose livelihood sources are now threatened by industrialization.

According to a research report published by the Goldman Sach Orissa with a huge reserve of Iron ore and other minerals, is going to be the metal hub of the world. Companies like Arcellor Mittal, POSCO, Vedanta, TATAs, and Jindals, BHP Bilton and RIO TINTO and many more interested to set up their huge facilities are bound to affect our fragile Eco system. In this context ORRA has a clear cut and definite vision for social and Economical upliftment of the backward and the poor people of the region without damaging the Eco- system, the culture and the life style of people.

We at ORRA are an association of concerned people, thinkers, Intellectuals, Academicians, Scientists,Researchers, Environmentalists, and other activists. We have undertaken different projects towards conservation of our coastline by planting mangrove forests. We also have undertaken seaweed cultivation in Chilika. We are actively supported by different government agencies to realize the goals.
